It is important to study argument because the process of learning to argue is encompassed by the process of learning how to be an effective member of society. The study of argument is universal as most people will encounter an argument or debate at some point in their lives, even if it is simply with themselves. The workplace is a major setting in which learning how to properly argue would be beneficial. The study of argument allows people to form opinions and learn how to express those opinions while listening to what others have to say as well. Studying argument enables a person to understand what he or she actually believes and allows for tools to research and prepare for an argument to be learned. Those tools are critical for others to be able to believe in and potentially agree with one’s argument.
